I've been eating pizza at Artichokes Basille's Pizza for a few years now. I'd love to pinpoint the exact moment I started having it but that memory seems a bit fuzzy to me. It might've been after a night out at a karaoke bar where I might've been assisted with the act of walking many hours later and possibly had a pizza stuffed inside of my mouth with the hopes that all of its delicious oils would soak up the alcohol that was, surely, seeping outside of me. Again, that might've been what happened. (Full disclosure: that's EXACTLY what happened.)
Either way, I was introduced to one of the more decadent pizzas I've ever had in New York: The Artichoke Slice. Covered in a super cheesy, greasy sauce and peppered with artichokes, that pizza is to die for. I've read many negative reviews about it, though, especially from a lot of people who consider themselves connoisseurs of the dish. But I can't say a negative thing about it. It's an over the top piece of food to handle and easily squashes down any hunger you might have. I love that pizza so much I could never have imagined myself getting any other of Artichoke Basille's offerings. Till I walked into the Artichoke Pizza on 111 MacDougal Street and ordered a pepperoni slice. Can't say what made me break protocol (perhaps it was my week long yearning for pasta sauce) but I'm happy I tried out a new slice.
The pepperonis were incredibly delicious, the cheese was as melty as I always dream that cheese on a pizza should be and the crust was pretty excellent. And by that I mean the crust did not lose any of its balance. The slice came out of the oven piping hot and every bite I took was like eating off of an edible plate. Exceptional hold. Kinda made me wish more pizza held itself up like this slice did. Don't get me wrong, I love folding my pizza but I also didn't hate not having to. All in all, a very delicious slice of pizza.
